The Grits
This one took place at Rainbow Lakes in Kannapolis NC… In 1967 I was 12 years old then. It was Wallace, Joe, Butch and me we got there and got setup and mom came down and said boys I made you all some bait. We all said well let’s see it mom for that is what they all call her. It was Grits and it was like none that we had ever seen before. It was like Jell-O so we said ok and we started to bait up with it. Before we got all the reels baited we had fish. Joe said Paul lets go to the store right fast I need something I said ok. So we let Wallace and Butch there with the reels.
We had to put the grits on the hook and put it in your hand to throw it out in the water. It was so soft. They were running with it while you had it in your hand from putting it in the water. We were catching them 3 at a time all of us and while we were at the store Wallace and Butch got a 19.3 lber. That got us the biggest fish of the day and the weekly and the monthly and a jar that had 450.00 in it. We also got 9 of the 12 hours that day.
So we have to think Mom for the Grits that we use that day. We were never able to make them grits a gene. And to Wallace and butch for watching my reels while we were gone to the store. All in all it was great day of carp fishing for all of us and one that I won’t ever forget.
