This is the story of my first time carp fishing. I had all ways been on my Dad to take me fishing. Now Dad was not a fisherman, but I was about to turn 11 and he got me up one Saturday and told me to get ready that we were going fishing. That is all it took. Man you talking about a Kid that was on the top of the world you know. It took me about 3mins to get ready. Well we got my stuff up and then he went to the store and broth me a new Zebco 202 I was happy.
We left the store, and he took me to a lake that was call H&L Carp Lakes. We went inside and he pays for me to fish. It cost $5.00 to get on all of what they call jackpots. There was a weekly, monthly, Daly and a dollar an hour. We walk out side and look around, He said son get your reel and let's see what you can do. So I took off running to the car to get the stuff. When I look around Dad was talking to a man on the lake. He said son we are going to fish here beside this man. His name was Joe Powell. I did not know it then but he was to become one of the most important men in my life.
Dad and Joe started to rig up my reel. Joe ask Dad what kind of bait we had and Dad told him that he brought some for up at the sack. They put some on the hook and Dad handed me the reel. I look at him and said what do I do. They started to laugh. Dad said son push the button in and throws it out. Well a couple of hours went by and noting happens. Then all h-ll breaks out. The reel started to go sliding on the ground and in the water it went. Dad steps up to his knees and grab the reel. Then he hands it to me. It felt like it would pull me in the lake instead of me pulling it in. I would pull back on the rod and the tip would touch the handle. The fish would scream out like you would not believe. Well I had them broth giving me instructing on what to do. But they did not know that this fish was doing what He wanting to do. In the next few mins that fish was all in about 9 reels and every body was laughing at me. We got the fish out of all those reels just for it to make another run. This was to be his last for he bent that rod so hard that it Brooke in half, line and all. My Dad, you never heard him says a bad word but on this day he said Dame. On this day old Just Carp'N was born.
A few months later my Dad pass away. That was the hardest day of my life and still is. In this year is all so when I started to fishing with Rick. A few years later I lost one of my dearest friends and best teachers a man could every have Joe Powell.
