PACK BAITS

Pack baits was the first baits that I really got into and the baits that set up the love for making and massing with all baits. It was clean too mass with and did not cost an arm and leg. All so the man that I know was the man too start it around here. That put me right into the first of it as it all started.

Now if I can remember right I think that pack baits really was at first sink baits that fishermen use at the river too catch catfish with. But Butch's Dad had the insight to see that they would work for carp fishing and that is the part that he started I think. He took it and came up with what work for carp and that in my book is what made him the first and will remain that way in my book.

Finding the words to tell how to make it is hard for me. I have trouble with that in the first place but maybe the Lord and Rick will help me out on this. Too my other teachers that are fishing that big lake in the sky I can use some help from you all so you here.

If I can remember this was how I was told too make it. Take half and half soybean and wheat bran and you add enough flour to get it too pack. Simple right no sir it’s not. Right here let me add this use self-risen flour and not plain it will work but the bait will lack something that it has too have. See in pack bait it has got too swell for that is one of the things that it takes to get the texture that is so important to making bait any bait. I believe that in this swelling part that your bait does is too make it so that it will bubble. As I said earlier in the book, that is something that you need for it to do. That it is one of the things that attract the carp. That is what we want to do.

Over the years fishermen would use anything that they could think of too get the bait too do this. Even too putting candies and other things like Aqua Saucer too get a bait to bubble. But you cannot use a lot of these things at a lot of Pay-Lakes now. So watch the rules you hear.

There is one more thing that you need too play close attraction too wail making a pack bait. That is little write string looking things in it. I don't know what makes it but I do know that it will be there if it is right. I have seen a lot of packs mostly mine that did not have this. They would catch fish but not like Butch's Dad's would do. Any time that he made a pack they would be there in it. I ask a couple of times but he never told me other than some things you have to learn on your own and smile. Sometimes I would have then and guest what them were the times that I would not write it down so it is lost.

Too even see them you would have to look at the bait real close. It kindly look like a spider web in your bait. But like I said you would have to look at it close and have some in your hand packing a little and looking at what it was doing at the time to see them. It was something that you would not ever see if you weren't looking for it.

Pack baits you can add about just anything to them. That is one thing that makes them one of the best baits around. You can get all kinds of stuff at the food store too put in them. There for a wail you could even get wheat bran at the store. I use a lot of wheat germ in my pack baits and all so in millet baits. That was in place of wheat bran. Grape juices and apple juices are great to use in them besides water. If you use water it is best to use the water from the lake that you are fishing at even if you have to make a trip down there too get some. I use to keep a gallon jug of different water from different lakes at home so I would have it to use. Don't know but Rick and I use too think that it was something to do with the ph of the water at different lakes. That made them different.

Flour this is hard one too explain too you. You want to use enough to get the bait to stay together about 2 to 3 mins. Now this is wail keeping all other things as they are needed. The texture and the bubbles are something that good pack bait has too had as said above in the other stuff that we talk about in this book. We will keep talking about till we are done with it. Because it is so invaluable with any bait that you will come up with or make. I will let the time be a little longer to obtain all of the above that we talk about in any bait that I make.

Here are a few baits too get you started and on your way. I hope that you will catch the fish that I have over the years with them for they have been good ones too me.

The ways that pack bait should act in the water. This will be a hard one to describe to you. Just remember that this is only one carper view and nothing else. You will find out that there are a lot of them out there. Well the first thing I will talk about to you is the way that a pack should feel. It should feel very firm when pack and very tight. You get this feeling by the base that you use. All packs will feel something like I'm trying to describe here. Even rice baits. Millet is one that will feel different than most it will be like a rock and that is just the way that is.

Now packs will feel different too each fishermen out there. I know that you are starting to all ready think that this guy is full of it. For it probably sounds like he's already going in circles. Just stay with me here OK. You will have to play with the base to get it too feel this way that I'm trying to describe here. For it is the way that it feels to me and me along so you have to find were it is like that to you.

I'm talking about soybean and wheat bran here. For that way it does not cost so much too learn with. You can make it as much as you want and it will take a bit of massing with to get it. Just stay with half and half too start with. Only use half as much cracked corn as you would the soybean or wheat bran.
             · Let’s say 5 cups soybean, wheat bran
· Start off with 1 and ½ cups of flour to the 5 cups. Now if you use less just cut the flour so that it will end up with the same ratio.

             · If I was using the 5 cup thing I would use 16oz of cream corn and two ounces of a flavoring. So that would be 18 ounces of liquid. Water or juice will not give the same feel as the cream corn so just start with half of it then add it till you get the feel to the bait.

             · One other thing that you can do here is to use this ratio to make just a soybean bait. One other thing this is a soybean meal and not the whole bean.    Here is one for you to try got some big fish with this bait over the years.

Cinnamon Soybean Pack Bait

5 cups soybean

1 1/2 cups flour

1 cup millet

1 small can of cinnamon

1 can of cream corn

Mix all in bucket real well. Test to see if it will break inside 2 minutes for most. If not fix that. If it takes too long then add some soybean or millet to it. If not long enough add flour to it and you have it. Inside 5 mins is ok for me. If too dry add some more cream corn to it.

Back too what we were talking about. After you have mix it and got the feel as close as you can. Get a bucket and put some water in it. You want it to be close to the same tempt. That you will be fishing in. Which means a lot with the breakdown of the bait. What you want to see here is the key I think to great pack bait.

Before I get into this let me say something on the flour thing. With plain flour you do not get the swelling out of the bait that it needs to have. That's way that we use the self-rising flour. Wheat bran will make it swell some but you need the self-rising flour to kick it in gear if you know what I mean. Were as you need the soybean to tighten it up if needs to be some and to a degree. It won't keep it together like flour but it will slow it down if it's too fast.

Well let's say that you have the feel right now. So we want to see what it is doing in the water. What we talk about here will and should take place inside of 2 mins and no longer then 3.

             1. The first thing that you will and should see is a swelling of the bait going on. It should swell quite a bit inside the first min.

             2. Now still inside of the last part of the first min you should start to see some cracking of the bait starting to go along with that some malting on the outside of it all so. Maybe even some bubbling starting to happen now.

             3. Now if this pack bait is close if you were to reach in and feel it. It would be real soft on the outside and then as you got more into it, it would feel hard in the center. This would be at the last of the first to the start of two mins.

            4. Within the 2 to the last min into it what you want is a lot of bubbling going on with the bait. If it is right you will have that and the ball will be swelling up quite a bit more and if you reach in and touch it now it would just fall apart. But it will stay together till you touch it if it's right.

Well that is about all I can think of right now. Maybe it will be enough to help you get started with pack baits and get you on the right track with it. Come to think about this let me say here that the chow that I make and use is real close to the way that I have try and describe here. The baits in the pack family that does have a different are the rice and millet baits. Too I the different is the way that it has done when it is done. It has falling all apart and is just lying around the pop. All so soybean and wheat bran will do the same way if there is something that is missing with it. But for the rice and the millet this is normal. If the soybean and wheat bran does this it is ok for they will still catch some great fish. It's the getting to the way that I said for me is the fine art about it and that is what I enjoy about making pack baits. It’s all most as challenging as catching the fish its self maybe just a little more.

Pack baits are good to use at any time of the year.
